On our second day in London, we were able to do a lot of interesting things before noon! We started the morning by taking the tube to a PR firm, Mike Worldwide, in the borough. After we were greeted by our tour guide, who was lovely, we finished up our tour at George’s Pub, and then groups split up to start our scavenger hunt.
During our meeting at Mike Worldwide, we learned about the cultural differences among the workplaces in the UK. I learned that in the UK, people take month-long vacations or holidays with paid leave from their company. In the US, this is sort of frowned upon and definitely not funded by the company. We also learned that health care is fully covered by the NHS. Which means people can go to the hospital and not pay a large fee when they leave. The most interesting thing I learned during our meeting was that people in the US often communicate directly and get to the point when working with colleagues. While in the UK, they use a softer and less direct manner of communication. This stuck out to me because I have worked on a marketing team as an intern before. I really enjoyed discussing the differences between the US and UK workplaces.
After our meeting, we were greeted by our tour guide, who showed us the Tower Bridge, a couple of monuments, and Borough Market. One particular church we stopped at was the tenth-oldest church in London. After that, we went to Borough Market to discover the many different stands and markets available. The group split up on their own, and I was able to take some cool pictures and try some new food. I was able to finally try the empanadas and chocolate-covered strawberries that I discovered on TikTok.
Our tour guide brought us to George’s Pub, which has been there for 500 years. After a drink, we said goodbye to our tour and dispersed into our groups to start the scavenger hunt.
Overall, I really enjoyed today. I was fully rested and ready to go. I enjoyed learning about some of the history of London, visiting our second pub, and then exploring London in our scavenger hunt groups.
